Features

Everything a pocket NAS should do.

Read the setup guide

Browse from any browser

  • Open a link or scan a QR on a laptop, tablet or another phone, no app needed.
  • Preview photos, video, audio and documents; upload by drag-and-drop; download folders as a zip.
  • Create, rename, move, copy, zip and unzip. Dark mode on both sides.

Send phone-to-phone

  • Nearby finds Shelf and LocalSend devices on the network; send files or a message to one or many.
  • Accept what you want, star trusted devices, set a PIN for strangers, or add a device by address.
  • Bluetooth is one tap away when there is no WiFi.

Receive from anywhere

  • One list of everything that landed on the phone: browser uploads, Chrome, nearby devices, WebDAV, the share sheet.
  • Open, share or find the file in two taps; a badge counts new arrivals.
  • Never empty: the Receive page shows the address, a QR code and the four ways to send files to the phone.

A real file manager

  • Shelf folder, whole phone, Downloads, Camera, Pictures, Movies, Music, Documents and SD cards.
  • Sort, search everywhere, pin folders, select all, batch rename, find the largest files.
  • SHA-256 on any file to verify a transfer.

Transfers that finish

  • Resumable uploads in 8 MB chunks over four connections, with checksum verification.
  • Paste a link and the phone downloads it for everyone over up to eight connections.
  • Push files from the phone to every connected browser.

Mount it as a drive

  • WebDAV for Finder, Explorer and GNOME Files; FTP for FileZilla and file-manager apps.
  • Share links with expiry and download limits for anyone on your network.
  • shelf.local works as the address.

No router? Be the network

  • One tap starts a private network with its own join QR.
  • Devices that join can open Shelf, chat and send files with no internet at all.
  • Built-in speed test shows what your WiFi can do.

Lock it down

  • Open access at home, a PIN on shared WiFi, or accounts with read-only, upload, full and admin roles.
  • Optional HTTPS with a certificate the phone makes for itself.
  • Backup of settings and users, diagnostics and logs on the phone, nothing uploaded.
Shelf Connect for Chrome

Your phone, one click away from any tab.

Extension page
Shelf Connect dashboard in Chrome: files waiting for the browser, a drop zone to send files to the phone, and the list of files the phone received

The dashboard keeps every phone live: transfers, files, chat, devices and the Receive page with a drop zone that sends straight into Inbox/. It polls only while it is visible and updates in place, so nothing blinks.

Send from Chrome

Right-click any link, image or page: the phone downloads it. Drop files on the popup. Alt+Shift+S sends the tab you are on.

Receive in the background

Select files on the phone and tap To browsers: a notification appears and, with auto-download on, the files land in your Downloads folder.

AI helpers, your keys

Summarise a page into chat or ask about a folder with Chrome's built-in model or your own Claude API key. File contents never leave the phone.

How it is sold

Google Play Billing only: subscription shelf_pro or the one-time shelf_pro_lifetime. Restore on any phone with the same Google account, cancel in Google Play. The app never sees your card.

How it works

Thirty seconds from install to shared drive.

Start sharing

Open Shelf → Network → Start sharing. The phone shows an address and a QR code.

Open it anywhere

Scan the QR or type the address in any browser on the same WiFi. Laptops can also mount it as a drive.

Move files any way you like

Drag into the browser, send phone-to-phone from Nearby, push files to browsers with To browsers, or paste a link for the phone to download.

No router? Be the network

Network → Create private network. Others join that WiFi with the join QR and open Shelf there.

Under the hood

Transfer techniques that respect your time.

8 MB × 4

Resumable chunked uploads

Big files are split into 8 MB chunks sent over four connections, each landing at its own offset in a pre-sized file. A reload, a WiFi drop or an app restart continues where it stopped; an optional SHA-256 is verified before the file appears.

×8

Segmented downloads

The download manager probes a server for Range support and fetches up to eight byte ranges at once, each resumable on its own, each with its own progress bar.

224.0.0.167

LocalSend v2 discovery

Multicast announcements on port 53317, HTTP registration, prepare-upload sessions, the PIN handshake and partial accept. Real LocalSend apps see Shelf and can send to it.

/dav/ · :2121

WebDAV and FTP

PROPFIND, PUT, MKCOL, MOVE, COPY and class-2 locks, so Finder and Explorer treat the phone as a drive. FTP with passive mode, resume and MLSD listings.

P-256

HTTPS without an authority

The phone signs its own elliptic-curve certificate for shelf.local and its addresses. Browsers warn once; install the certificate for a permanent padlock.

0

Bytes leave your network

No relay, no account server, no analytics. The app only talks to devices you connect and to links you paste for it to download.

FAQ

Questions people ask.

Can I really use my Android phone as a NAS?

Yes. Shelf runs a small file server on the phone. Any device on the same WiFi opens the phone's address in a browser to browse, preview, upload and download, and laptops mount the phone as a network drive over WebDAV or FTP. Nothing is uploaded to the internet. Full walkthrough in the setup guide.

The other device can't open the address

Both devices must be on the same WiFi, and some guest or public networks block device-to-device traffic ("AP isolation"). The private network (Network → Create private network) always works. Also check that sharing is on and the port (default 8080) is the one in the link.

Does it work with LocalSend?

Yes. Shelf speaks the LocalSend v2 protocol: LocalSend apps see Shelf as a device and can send to it, and Shelf can send to them. If you set a Nearby PIN, LocalSend asks for it before sending.

shelf.local doesn't resolve

macOS, iOS, Windows 10+ and Linux with Avahi resolve .local names. Android Chrome usually needs the IP address, which is always shown next to the QR.

Windows won't map the WebDAV drive

Windows refuses Basic authentication over plain http unless HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters\BasicAuthLevel is set to 2. In open access mode no sign-in is needed and it maps without changes. FTP in the Explorer address bar needs no registry change. Details in the WebDAV guide.

Why does Shelf need All files access?

So that any folder can be shared and the file manager can show Camera, Downloads, Documents and SD cards. Shelf never uploads anything anywhere; see the privacy policy.

Is it safe on a coffee-shop WiFi?

Set a PIN or accounts first (Settings → Access), set Nearby visibility to Trusted only, and turn on HTTPS. Or use the private network, which only your invited devices can join.

Sharing stops after a while

Some phones kill background apps. Settings → Background → Battery optimisation → mark Shelf as not optimised. Pro adds "Start sharing at boot" and "Auto-start on trusted WiFi".

How fast is it?

On 5 GHz WiFi expect 15–40 MB/s for browser uploads and downloads; the speed test on the Network page shows what your link can do.
